Punk’s power-chord usage is 2–21.5× higher than elsewhere, and rap scarcely touches suspended, diminished, or augmented chords. Over time, seventh chords have declined from 27.7% of usage in the 1940s to 8.25% today—mirroring jazz’s waning influence—while minor triads have surged. Introducing a “unique-chord rate” to adjust for evolving song lengths, Dalla Riva shows median chord diversity per song has fallen from 13% in the 1930s to 8% in the 2020s, underscoring a shift toward repetitiveness.
